There was still thick snow on the ground in Smithills Country Park and a revised course had to be laid out; six laps of around 1.8km for the 10k and three for the 5km race. It was a good course looping the playing fields but diving off into the woods up to the boundary wall of the hall and down again and then glancing off the bottom edge of the fields for a bit of variety. The snow had a crystallised hard surface and was very challenging; despite the number of laps the small field of runners only just managed to finally break it up.
There was a fine lead set by international Paul Freary to win the race, chased all the way by Paul Muller who also has international honours. There were two new members from Horwich to make up a team and challenge the local lads Bolton United.
It was very cold, only just above freezing, but many thanks go to Ken Mayor for laying out the course and arranging the facilities.
These results are still provisional with some positions still to be confirmed. This may be the quickest any Northern Veterans results have hit the web!
